BTC was a higher risk asset to long last cycle, before the spot ETF. Part of Bitcoin’s story and why it would become such a huge success was the community that firmly upheld the cypherpunk spirit (almost to a fault, like a cult). This cycle, I believe ETH is more derisked than BTC was the last cycle, but ETH still offers a larger reward for investors if it continues winning the lion’s share of markets it’s focused on (stablecoins, RWAs, L2 customization, high value DeFi, institutional DeFi). What I am most proud of and drawn to is a community that is still hell bent on the same cypherpunk principles that got us here. Ethereum builders and investors haven’t handed over the reigns to our TradFi overlords in same way as Bitcoin post-spot-ETF. Since the BTC spot ETF, BTC has crossed the chasm with TradFi investors and is no longer a contrarian trade. It has suddenly become a consensus trade but it is still early enough for many to ride another 10x in BTC over the next few years. Despite the milestone of having a spot ETF for ETH, Ethereum has doubled down on building for onchain vs offchain, almost to a fault if short term price is the KPI for success. Due to the vast complexity of what can be built on it, Ethereum/ETH still remain less well understood and hence the market has struggled to fully price in the onchain economy it will power, one worth trillions and then tens of trillions. We love the left-curve / right-curve meme too often in crypto but truth is we all got here because we didn’t accept what was surface level in front of us. We dug deep, taught ourselves a lot about money and finance, thought deeper about it, and came to our own conclusions long before most of society. We realized that digital assets like BTC or ETH, offered a lot and programmable finance offered even more, such as Ethereum (and others like Solana/Cosmos). Digital assets and blockchain networks are a breakthrough for reimagining such a major construct in our lives that is money and finance. Although I understand why they did it for the sake of their bags, Bitcoiners have accepted that an increasing % of the BTC supply will be owned and custodied by TradFi and other middlemen, defeating one of the most unique benefits we celebrate Bitcoin for—it’s backing of our self sovereignty through a digital SoV / digital cash. Ethereum has not given up this fight. Ethereum is still building the cypherpunk dream onchain. Ethereum demands we have the freedom to fully control our finances with DeFi, that we be freer to do as we please with the assets we own, whenever we want. I will be the first to welcome any public companies, banks, governments, family offices that want to buy the ETH ETF or any other TradFi instrument that gets them ETH exposure, but that’s not the finish line. Price is part of the game but not the only factor in what decides if or when we win. We win when DeFi is undeniable. We win offering value you cannot unsee. We win offering a superior product to TradFi. We win when we are not just an alternative economy, but THE ECONOMY. A digitally native economy every serious investor must have exposure to. Build a finance system that is not just trustless, not just permissionless, not just onchain—build one that is better.
