US lawmakers urge President Biden to bring back Binance executive detained in Nigeria
A group of U.S. lawmakers, including Michael McCaul (R-Texas), have written to President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger D. Carstens, urging them to treat the case of Tigran Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen and Binance's head of compliance, as a hostage situation. Gambaryan has been detained in Nigeria for almost three months and may be suffering from malaria. The lawmakers fear for his life and have called for immediate action to ensure his safety and bring him back to the U.S. Gambaryan and another company executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, were detained by Nigerian officials after they were invited by the country to resolve a dispute with the crypto exchange. Anjarwalla managed to escape, but Gambaryan remains in custody. Binance and Gambaryan are facing money laundering and tax evasion charges in Nigeria.
