Former Child Gold Smuggler Shares Story of Evading Apartheid Government in South Africa
During his childhood, Edan Yago helped his family smuggle gold out of South Africa, as the government had imposed capital controls to stabilize the rand during international sanctions and was hunting down some of his family members. Yago eventually had to leave South Africa due to the situation. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Yago shared his experience of being involved in gold smuggling at the age of 9 to 11.
