Detroit authorities have announced that from the second half of 2025, residents will be able to pay taxes and city fees through a platform operated by PayPal.

Detroit is creating a technology-enabled environment that empowers residents and businesses. We are excited to be one of the first major U.S. cities to explore the civic applications of blockchain and allow residents to use cryptocurrency as a means of payment, said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Detroit Treasurer Nikhil Patel also stressed the importance of modern payment methods.

"The Treasury is committed to modernizing our payment channels to improve customer service and increase the efficiency of our internal operations. This platform is useful for Detroiters who want to use cryptocurrency, and it will also make electronic payments easy for all residents, including those who do not have a bank account," he said.

Detroit has become the first major city to implement cryptocurrency payments for taxes. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Detroit has a population of about 630, making it the 000th most populous city in the country.

Earlier, three US states, Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana, announced that they accept digital assets to pay state fees. The authorities of Miami and New York are also showing interest in blockchain, but have not yet made a decision on this matter.
