The World project, formerly known as Worldcoin, has officially started operating in the United States, according to an announcement released on Wednesday. The initiative led by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, aims to verify human identity in the digital environment and, with that, allow the receipt of WLD tokens by users who prove themselves to be unique individuals.
Initially, the US expansion will take place in six cities: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Francisco. The project aims to create a global network of trusted digital identities, in response to the growing presence of bots and artificial intelligence agents on the internet.
World already had operations in several countries, and its verification model — based on scanning eyeballs with a device called the Orb — has raised concerns among privacy groups. The company says, however, that biometric data is not stored, reducing privacy risks.
With around 26 million registered users on the app, 12 million of whom are considered “unique humans,” the project calls itself “the true human network.” The expansion into the US comes at a time of greater regulatory openness for cryptocurrency companies under the new administration of Donald Trump.
In addition to identity verification, the project has announced the launch of a Visa card in 2025. The World Card will be connected directly to the app’s digital wallet and will allow the use of WLD tokens and other digital assets at merchants that accept Visa. Merchants will be able to receive payments in fiat currency, without the need to deal with cryptocurrencies.
Another highlight is the partnership with Match Group, the company responsible for platforms such as Tinder, Hinge and Match.com. A pilot project will be launched with Tinder users in Japan, offering verification of real profiles to promote more authentic connections on dating apps.
World App users will also have access to the Kalshi platform, through a mini-application integrated into the system. Kalshi allows users to participate in prediction markets on a variety of topics.
World aims to reach 1 billion users with the adoption of a compact version of the Orb and is already collaborating with peripheral maker Razer to offer human verification in online games and the company's physical stores.
