Bhutan has officially become the first country where travelers can pay for the entire spectrum of tourism services using cryptocurrency — from airline tickets to street market goods.
The Kingdom of Bhutan, in partnership with Binance Pay and DK Bank, has launched a first-of-its-kind cryptocurrency payment system for tourists under the initiative One Wallet, One Journey. The system spans more than 100 merchants across the country, enabling visitors to pay for flights, visas, accommodation, tour guides, museum admissions, artisan goods, and even purchases at rural markets.
The project offers a fully contactless and cashless travel experience throughout Bhutan. Crypto payments are processed via the Binance app, supporting over 100 digital assets including BTC, BNB, and USDC. Transactions are instantly settled and converted into local currency by DK Bank — Bhutan’s first digital bank, licensed by the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan (RMA).
Unlike traditional payment methods, cryptocurrency allows travelers to avoid high fees for international transfers and currency exchange, making it an attractive alternative for cross-border spending.
“Cryptocurrency is incredibly convenient for travel, commerce, and any activity that involves cross-border payments. It has no physical weight, no expiration date. In many cases, crypto is even more practical than the latest FinTech infrastructure for international transactions,” said Max Krupyshev, CEO of CoinsPaid , on the Purpose Driven FinTech podcast.
The initiative also aims to expand economic opportunities for small business owners and residents in remote parts of Bhutan, where conventional card infrastructure is lacking. With just a smartphone and a QR code, even the most rural vendors can now accept payments from international visitors.
Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, noted that One Wallet, One Journey showcases how Web3 technologies can serve as a bridge between cultures and economic ecosystems. Damcho Rinzin, Director of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, added that in this context, cryptocurrency is more than a payment method — it reflects Bhutan’s commitment to innovation, financial inclusion, and user convenience.
It is also worth noting that the Bhutanese government has previously announced plans to establish a strategic crypto reserve in the special administrative region of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). The reserve will consist of BTC, ETH, and BNB, and will be managed by the state-owned holding company Druk Holding and Investments (DHI).
