Bhutan has launched the world’s first nationwide crypto tourism payment system, enabling travelers to use digital assets effectively. In a groundbreaking move, Binance Pay and Bhutan’s DK Bank have partnered to make the Himalayan kingdom a global leader in crypto-enabled travel. According to the Binance blog post, over 100 merchants, from hotels to market vendors, can now accept cryptocurrency, transforming Bhutan into a digital travel destination.

A Seamless Crypto Journey from Arrival to Departure

Tourists can now pay for flights, visa fees, lodging, and even local produce using crypto through Binance Pay. The system supports dynamic and static QR codes, allowing real-time payments using over 100 cryptocurrencies. These include Bitcoin (BTC), Binance Coin (BNB), and USD Coin (USDC).

Additionally, the Binance app ensures that transactions are settled instantly in Bhutanese currency via DK Bank. This removes high transaction fees, exchange rate issues, and limitations tied to foreign cards. Moreover, Binance Pay operates gas-free and already serves millions in over 100 countries, offering reliability and broad access.

Binance CEO Richard Teng said, “We are excited to partner with Bhutan as we are not only advancing the use of cryptocurrencies in travel, but also setting a precedent for how technology can bridge cultures and economies.”

Empowering Bhutanese Communities Through Digital Inclusion

This initiative has a broader purpose beyond modern convenience—it is an economic inclusion strategy targeting rural and small-scale vendors. Bhutan’s Department of Tourism noted the impact on remote communities that lacked access to card terminals or traditional financial systems. Damcho Rinzin, Director of the Department of Tourism, said, “This is more than a payment solution—it’s a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience.”

Consequently, vendors in remote areas can now accept crypto through mobile devices, connecting them directly with international travelers. This aligns with Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness model, balancing economic progress with cultural and environmental preservation.

DK Bank, Bhutan’s first fully digital bank, handles the local currency settlements. It is licensed by the Royal Monetary Authority and aims to expand financial access to underserved regions. This partnership integrates its mission into a sector with high growth and visibility—tourism.
