Former UFC champion Conor McGregor, now a presidential candidate in Ireland, has proposed creating a national Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) reserve to empower citizens and strengthen the country’s financial independence.

“Crypto in its origin was founded to give power back to the people. An Irish Bitcoin strategic reserve will give power to the people’s money,” McGregor wrote on X.

He invited experts and industry leaders to discuss the initiative, telling Bitcoin advocate Anthony Pompliano.

“We need the greatest minds for this BTC Reserve. Message me and let’s chat on my space,” he said.

“David message me, let’s discuss your ideas!” McGregor responded after David Bailey, a crypto advisor to former US President Donald Trump, also reached out.

McGregor announced his independent candidacy for the Irish presidency in March 2025, focusing his campaign on anti-immigration policies and crime reduction.

Ireland’s next presidential election is scheduled by November 11, 2025, when current President Michael D. Higgins’ term ends.

Establishing a Bitcoin reserve would be a significant undertaking, as only a few countries, including the US, El Salvador, and Bhutan, have implemented such reserves.

McGregor’s political profile recently increased after a White House visit where he met Donald Trump, who expressed support for him.

However, McGregor faces legal challenges in Ireland, including a recent civil conviction for sexual assault, which he has appealed, and previous investigations related to hate speech.

His latest crypto venture, the REAL project, failed to meet funding goals during a presale in early April, raising $392,315 against a $1 million target, leading to refunds for token buyers.

Despite setbacks, McGregor’s proposal signals growing interest in integrating Bitcoin into national financial strategies and highlights the intersection of cryptocurrency with politics.

At the time of reporting, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $103,900.
