  • Elon Musk launches XChat with encrypted messages, file sharing, and video/audio calling.
  • Built on Rust, XChat features ‘Bitcoin-style encryption,’ sparking debate among developers.
  • X is also developing X Money, a feature expected to launch in limited beta later this year.

Elon Musk has launched a new messaging feature called XChat on the social platform X and shared the update online. Musk stated that the platform offers features like encryption, vanishing messages, and supports the transfer of any file, and also includes audio and video calling.

XChat is part of Musk’s ongoing effort to turn X into an all-in-one app. He previously announced plans to add financial features. In October 2022, Musk acquired the platform,  and since then, has promised to make it similar to WeChat, combining social media with other services.

All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio/video calling.

According to Musk, XChat is built using Rust, a modern programming language known for safety. He also said it uses “Bitcoin-style encryption.” This statement sparked debate among tech and crypto experts, who questioned the accuracy of the term.

Some critics pointed out that Bitcoin does not use encryption for transactions, while others suggested that Musk might have meant BIP-151, a protocol for encrypted Bitcoin node communication. BitMEX Research made that suggestion in response to Musk’s statement.

Bitcoin core developer Luke Dashjr criticized the decision to use Rust, arguing that it could be risky for security. Further, JAN3 CEO Samson Mow pointed out that Bitcoin itself isn’t encrypted. Notably, X had paused its encrypted messaging feature on May 29 and stated that it was working on improvements. The community highlighted taht the delay could potentially be of teh release of XChat.

The new feature expands on the platform’s direct messaging system. It adds more functions that make it similar to apps like Signal or Telegram, known for encrypted and secure messaging.

In addition to XChat, Musk confirmed that X is developing a payment system, X Money, which will begin beta testing later this year. Musk said the beta will have limited access and emphasized the need for caution when handling user savings.

These moves show X’s shift toward becoming a broader service platform. It is moving beyond social media into messaging and finance. Musk’s vision includes blending communication, payments, and media in one place. For now, users can start using XChat as it rolls out across the platform, bringing a new layer of privacy and utility to the app. X has not given a timeline for the complete launch of X Money.
