Reddit is looking into incorporating eye-scanning technology developed by the Worldcoin project, an initiative led by Sam Altman, also CEO of OpenAI. The aim is to enable digital identity verification without compromising users' anonymity, according to investigation from Semafor based on sources close to the topic.

The technology in question involves a spherical device that scans users’ irises to generate a unique identifier, called a World ID. This identity serves as proof that the user is a human being and not an automated agent. In exchange for verification, new participants receive a bonus in WLD tokens, the project’s native cryptocurrency.
Reddit’s interest comes amid growing concern about the use of artificial intelligence to simulate human interactions on digital platforms. According to the sources, “World ID could soon become a way for Reddit users to verify that they are unique individuals while remaining anonymous on the platform.”
In addition to Reddit, other companies have also shown interest in the proposal. Tinder, for example, began testing the technology in Japan, with the intention of ensuring that users are actually interacting with real people. Tinder's parent company, Match Group, has entered into a direct partnership with the Worldcoin team to expand this initiative.
The verification proposal is in line with regulatory demands that have been gaining ground in American states, where mandatory age validation for the use of online services is being discussed. In parallel, Reddit considered legal action against the University of Zurich, after the institution conducted an AI experiment that involved creating fake profiles on the platform.
Unlike networks like TikTok and Instagram, Reddit is characterized by valuing content over the real identity of users, who generally use pseudonyms. In this context, adopting Worldcoin technology could serve as a solution to balance privacy and digital authentication, without compromising freedom of expression.
