According to AFP, the Smithsonian Institution issued a statement on the X social platform, explaining that the sign was always intended to be temporary and “did not meet the museum’s standards in terms of appearance, placement, timeline, or overall presentation.” The statement added: “It was inconsistent with other parts of the exhibition and obstructed the view of items in the display case.
