Mantle Network has taken a major step forward in Ethereum scaling, completing its long-awaited transition to a zero-knowledge rollup.

The upgrade, which went live on mainnet with the help of OP Succinct, makes Mantle the largest ZK rollup by total value locked, with more than $2 billion in assets secured.

The move shifts Mantle from optimistic rollup technology to a ZK-based system, which the team argues is better suited for what it calls a “Liquidity Chain,” an ecosystem designed to support decentralized finance, real-world assets , and institutional adoption.

With the upgrade, Mantle now offers one-hour transaction finality and six-hour withdrawals, which is a sharp improvement over competing Layer-2 networks where exits can take up to seven days.

Reportedly, proving costs have also dropped significantly, with transactions priced as low as $0.002 because of the Succinct’s prover network.

Mantle chose OP Succinct over other zkEVM solutions after struggling with customization and compatibility issues. By building on Succinct’s Rust-based zkVM, the project was able to add features such as custom gas tokens and EigenDA without disrupting developers or users.

For the broader Ethereum ecosystem, Mantle’s upgrade is being seen as proof that even large Layer-2 networks can safely transition to ZK technology.

The question now is whether Mantle’s early lead in ZK adoption translates into lasting developer traction and market share in the increasingly competitive Layer-2 landscape.

Why This Matters

Mantle’s upgrade shows big Layer-2s can actually make the leap to ZK tech, bringing faster, cheaper transactions and setting the tone for Ethereum’s next phase of growth.

People Also Ask:

What is Mantle Network?

Mantle Network is an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution that recently transitioned into a ZK rollup. It aims to lower transaction costs, speed up settlement, and support decentralized finance (DeFi), real-world assets, and institutional adoption.

What is a ZK rollup?

A ZK rollup (zero-knowledge rollup) is a Layer-2 technology that bundles many transactions together and submits them to Ethereum with a cryptographic proof. This allows for faster, cheaper, and more secure transactions while inheriting Ethereum’s security.

Why did Mantle move to a ZK rollup?

Mantle adopted ZK rollup technology to achieve faster finality, lower transaction costs, and improve user experience. The team also believes ZK is essential for building its “Liquidity Chain” ecosystem, connecting DeFi and real-world assets.

How does Mantle’s ZK rollup improve performance?

With its upgrade, Mantle offers one-hour transaction finality and six-hour withdrawals, compared to the seven-day exit times on many optimistic rollups. Proving costs are also reduced to as little as $0.002 per transaction.

What risks or challenges does Mantle face?

While Mantle now leads ZK rollups by total value locked (over $2 billion), it faces strong competition from projects like zkSync, StarkNet, and Polygon zkEVM. Sustaining developer traction and user growth will be critical.
