Amazon plans to purchase several thousand pedal-assisted cargo vehicles from Also, a company spun off from Rivian.

Also, a micromobility company that originated from Rivian, has secured a significant contract with Amazon to deliver thousands of its latest pedal-assist cargo quad vehicles. These vehicles are designed to transport over 400 pounds of packages while remaining compact enough to travel in bike lanes.

As part of this multi-year partnership, the two organizations will collaborate to adapt the pedal-assist vehicles to suit Amazon’s delivery operations in both Europe and the U.S. Also announced that the TM-Q pedal-assist electric quads are scheduled for release in spring 2026, a detail shared during an event in Oakland where the company also introduced its new TM-B e-bike.

Although Also is a recent entrant to the market, its leadership team has a longstanding connection with Amazon. Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer from which Also emerged, counts Amazon as an investor and has already delivered over 25,000 electric delivery vans to the company.

“We have a deep understanding of how to collaborate,” Rivian’s founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told TechCrunch before the event, noting that insights gained from the EDV van initiative have been applied to this new venture. “Having Rivian as a major stakeholder is extremely beneficial, as it allows us to closely coordinate everything through a unified fleet management platform that oversees both large vehicles, like the EDV vans, and Also’s products.”

Scaringe pointed out that this relationship provides a clear understanding of Amazon’s requirements. “There’s no uncertainty, and Also has greatly benefited from the expertise of the Rivian team, who are closely involved due to their proximity to Amazon.”

Also began as an internal project within Rivian and became an independent entity earlier this year, rebranding and raising $105 million from Eclipse. While it now operates separately, it maintains strong links to Rivian, which retains a minority interest. Scaringe will join the board, and Also will leverage Rivian’s technology, retail network, and scale — resources it is already utilizing.

The TM-Q and the TM-B e-bike from Also share many core features, such as the drivetrain and a proprietary pedal-by-wire system. Several physical components are identical as well, including the handlebars and a five-inch circular touchscreen that can be rotated to lock or unlock the vehicle. This touchscreen displays navigation, media controls, fitness data, and assist settings, and connects to the Also app for battery monitoring, software updates, and security management.

Both vehicles utilize the same battery technology, though the quad cargo models have greater capacity. Instead of a single large battery, Also has opted for portable, removable batteries for the quads. Company president Chris Yu mentioned that they are developing docking stations to enable battery swapping.

Unlike the two-wheeled consumer version, the TM-Q is designed for commercial applications and comes equipped with software for managing logistics, deliveries, and charging. According to Emily Barber, Amazon’s Global Fleet Director, the TM-Q’s compact size and pedal-assist system make it especially well-suited for delivering packages in densely populated urban settings.

There is already a functioning micromobility network for Also’s quad cargo vehicles, with Amazon operating more than 70 micromobility hubs in cities throughout the U.S. and Europe, Barber said.

Amazon won’t be the exclusive customer for the TM-Q. Yu explained that, given the popularity of the quad design within the company, Also will not restrict the quad cargo vehicles solely to commercial buyers. The company has also introduced a consumer TM-Q, which uses the same quad platform but omits the delivery van enclosure. Instead, it features a bench seat spacious enough for friends, children, pets, or groceries.

Yu and Scaringe also suggested that more versions could be developed in the future.

“The focus isn’t so much on what’s on top, but rather on the core quad platform,” Yu commented.

Scaringe highlighted a key benefit: “What excites me about these is that creating a new top hat for a car costs about a billion dollars, but doing the same here is much more affordable,” he said with a laugh.
