TikTok now allows you to decide the amount of AI-created content you wish to view

TikTok, which began as a platform for user-created videos, is introducing a new feature that allows users to control the amount of AI-generated content appearing in their “For You” feed. The platform is also rolling out enhanced labeling methods for AI-generated material.

This new AI-generated content (AIGC) option is being added to the app’s “Manage Topics” section, where users can personalize the content they encounter on TikTok.

“Manage Topics already gives users the ability to adjust how frequently they see content from over 10 categories, such as Dance, Sports, and Food & Drinks,” TikTok shared in a blog update. “Similar to those controls, the AIGC feature is designed to help users customize the variety of content in their feed, rather than completely removing or replacing content.”

This update comes as other companies like OpenAI and Meta are also focusing on AI-driven feeds. In September, Meta introduced Vibes, a new feed for sharing and creating short AI-generated videos. Shortly after, OpenAI launched Sora, a social platform for making and sharing AI-generated video content.

Since Sora became available, realistic AI-generated videos have started appearing on TikTok. Many TikTok creators are also using AI to produce visuals for posts on topics such as history or celebrities.

According to TikTok, the new AIGC control allows users who prefer to see less AI-generated content to reduce its presence, while those interested in it can opt to see more.

To use this new feature, go to your Settings, choose “Content Preferences,” and select “Manage Topics.” From there, you can adjust the slider for various topics, including AI-generated content, to control how much of it appears in your For You feed.

TikTok says this update will be available in the next few weeks.

To strengthen its AI-generated content labeling, TikTok is now piloting a technology called “invisible watermarking.”

Currently, TikTok requires users to label realistic AI-generated content and utilizes Content Credentials from C2PA, a cross-industry technology that embeds metadata to indicate when content is AI-generated. However, TikTok points out that these labels can be lost if content is reuploaded or edited on other platforms.

With the introduction of “invisible watermarks,” TikTok is adding an extra layer of protection by embedding a watermark that only the platform can detect, making it more difficult for others to remove.

TikTok will begin applying invisible watermarks to AI-generated content created with its own tools, such as AI Editor Pro, as well as to content uploaded with C2PA’s Content Credentials. The company states that these watermarks will improve the reliability of its labeling. TikTok also mentions it will keep reading C2PA’s Content Credentials and apply them to AI-generated content produced on its platform.

In addition, TikTok has announced a $2 million AI literacy fund to support organizations like Girls Who Code in producing educational content about AI literacy and safety.
