AI Chatbot Market Sees Shifting Momentum

Recent insights from Sensor Tower reveal that ChatGPT’s rapid expansion is beginning to slow. Despite this, OpenAI’s chatbot still dominates the field, representing half of all global mobile downloads and 55% of worldwide monthly active users. However, Google’s Gemini is now outpacing ChatGPT in download rates, user growth, and time spent within the app.

This accelerating adoption rate could help Gemini close the gap with ChatGPT in the near future—a concern highlighted in a recent “code red” memo from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, urging the team to prioritize enhancements in personalization, reliability, and image generation.

Growth Trends: ChatGPT vs. Gemini

Both ChatGPT and Gemini continue to attract new users. As of November 2025, ChatGPT’s monthly active user base had surged by 180% year-over-year, while Gemini’s grew by 170%.

Yet, between August and November, ChatGPT’s global monthly active users increased by just 6%, reaching approximately 810 million. Sensor Tower suggests this modest growth may indicate that ChatGPT is approaching market saturation.

In contrast, Gemini’s monthly active users jumped by about 30% during the same period, fueled by the launch of its Nano Banana image generation model.

Gemini’s Integration and Market Share

The report also highlights that twice as many U.S. Android users now access Gemini directly through the Android OS compared to the standalone app. This integration could give Google a significant edge globally, as Gemini is not limited to app or web use alone.

When comparing all leading AI chatbots—including ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok—Gemini has increased its share of global monthly active users by three percentage points over the past seven months. Meanwhile, ChatGPT’s share declined by three percentage points in the last four months.

Rising Competition from Perplexity and Claude

Other competitors are also making waves. Perplexity and Claude both experienced triple-digit growth in 2025, with Perplexity’s user base expanding by 370% and Claude’s by 190% year-over-year.

ChatGPT’s global downloads rose by 85% year-over-year as of November, but this was below the average growth rate of 110% across the sector. Perplexity and Gemini led the pack, with increases of 215% and 190%, respectively.

User Engagement: Time Spent in App

Sensor Tower reports that Gemini users are now spending more than twice as much time in the app compared to a few months ago. By November, the average daily usage reached 11 minutes, a 120% increase since March—likely driven by the popularity of Nano Banana, introduced in September.

In comparison, ChatGPT users’ daily engagement grew by only 6% during the same timeframe, and time spent in November was 10% lower than in July.

Looking Ahead

While Google is making significant strides and narrowing the gap with ChatGPT, much of its recent momentum is tied to the success of Nano Banana. OpenAI could potentially regain its growth trajectory by launching new, impactful products of its own.
