Petco’s data breach exposed customers’ Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, and additional sensitive information
Petco Reports Data Breach Impacting Customer Information
Petco, a leading provider of pet products and services, recently acknowledged a security incident that exposed customers’ personal details. While the company initially withheld specifics about the compromised data, further disclosures have revealed the scope of the breach.
According to a filing submitted to the Texas attorney general’s office on Friday, the information accessed includes customers’ names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, financial account numbers, credit or debit card information, and dates of birth.
Petco has also submitted similar notifications to authorities in California, Massachusetts, and Montana. In Massachusetts and Montana, the company reported that one and three residents, respectively, were affected by the breach.
In California, where businesses must report breaches impacting at least 500 residents, Petco did not specify the total number of individuals affected. This omission suggests that the number of impacted customers in California exceeds that threshold.
When contacted for further details—such as the total number of customers impacted, whether there is evidence that cybercriminals accessed or stole the exposed data, the timeline of the incident, and the specific application involved—Petco spokesperson Ventura Olvera did not respond.
For reference, Petco reported serving over 24 million customers in 2022.
On Friday, Olvera issued a statement to TechCrunch indicating that the company has reached out to those whose information was compromised, providing them with additional details about the incident.
The California attorney general’s office published a sample notification letter sent by Petco to affected customers. The letter explains that a misconfigured setting in one of Petco’s software applications unintentionally made certain files accessible online. The company states it acted quickly to resolve the issue, removed the files from public access, corrected the software setting, and implemented further security measures.
As a response, Petco is offering complimentary credit and identity theft monitoring services to affected individuals in California, Massachusetts, and Montana. California law requires companies to provide such services when sensitive information like driver’s license or Social Security numbers are compromised. It remains uncertain whether similar support is being extended to victims in Texas.
