Apple Unveils 2025’s Most Popular Apps and Games

Apple has published its annual roundup of the year’s most downloaded apps and games in the United States. Leading the pack for free iPhone apps in 2025 is OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which secured the top position in terms of downloads.

Following ChatGPT in the free app rankings are Threads, Google, TikTok, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Gemini.

Last year, ChatGPT held the fourth spot, while Temu, a Chinese e-commerce platform, claimed first place. Despite launching on iPhone in May 2023 and enjoying a strong start, ChatGPT didn’t break into the top ten that year.

The rise of ChatGPT, surpassing established social media platforms and essential tools like Google Maps, highlights the growing influence of AI in daily life across the U.S. This trend also signals a potential shift in how users search for information on mobile, with more people turning to AI chatbots instead of traditional search engines, challenging Google’s dominance.

Earlier in the year, ChatGPT’s momentum was evident when it became the world’s most downloaded app in March, outpacing giants like TikTok and Instagram.

Apple’s report also includes the most popular paid apps, as well as the leading free and paid games for both iPhone and iPad, plus the top titles on Apple Arcade.
