Experts in both economics and technology anticipate that more businesses will turn to AI to replace human workers by 2026.
The well-known platform for finding contractors, formerly called Angie's List, has joined the growing list of companies referencing AI advancements as a factor in workforce reductions.
On Wednesday, Angi announced its decision to eliminate approximately 350 positions, aiming to streamline operations and support future growth. The company stated that these changes are being implemented to lower costs and restructure the organization, with AI-driven improvements playing a key role.
According to an SEC filing, Angi expects the layoffs to reduce annual expenses by $70 million to $80 million. However, the restructuring process itself is projected to cost between $22 million and $30 million.
Founded in the 1990s as a resource for homeowners seeking contractors for home projects and landscaping, Angie's List rebranded as Angi in 2021. As of the end of 2024, the company reported a workforce of roughly 2,800 employees.
In recent months, leaders at major tech firms such as Amazon and Salesforce have acknowledged that they are substituting some roles with AI technologies.
Renowned computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the "godfather of AI," has forecasted that the impact of AI on employment will intensify, with even more positions expected to be lost by 2026.
