Wheat Ends Thursday Session with Mixed Results
Wheat Market Wrap-Up: Mixed Results on Thursday
Wheat futures struggled to maintain earlier gains by the end of Thursday’s trading session. Chicago SRW contracts finished flat to slightly higher, while Kansas City HRW futures slipped by up to 2 cents. Meanwhile, Minneapolis spring wheat posted modest advances for the front months.
Weekly Export Sales Overview
The USDA released export sales figures for the week ending January 1, revealing that 118,701 metric tons of wheat for the 2025/26 marketing year were sold. This total fell short of analyst projections, which ranged from 200,000 to 500,000 metric tons. Despite missing expectations, sales were 6.64% higher than the same holiday week last year and represented a 24.4% increase from the previous week. The Philippines led purchases with 61,000 metric tons, and an additional 32,000 metric tons were sold to undisclosed destinations. There were also net reductions of 9,347 metric tons for the 2026/27 period.
Shipping and Supply Insights
According to the latest census data, wheat shipments in October reached 1.96 million metric tons (72.2 million bushels), marking the highest level in six years. However, this figure was still 39.19% lower than the previous month’s total.
The USDA is set to publish its updated WASDE report on Monday, with expectations that wheat ending stocks will decrease by 5 million bushels to 896 million bushels.
