James Malick Departs Point72 as Chief Strategy Officer

  • James Malick, who served as chief strategy officer at Point72, has recently left the hedge fund.
  • He became part of the firm in 2023 after previously working at Millennium, led by Izzy Englander.
  • During his tenure, Malick was included in the senior leadership group at the $41.5 billion asset manager.

Point72, with assets totaling $41.5 billion, has seen the departure of its chief strategy officer, James Malick. According to sources familiar with the situation, Malick, who joined Steve Cohen’s organization in 2023, exited the company this week. Both Malick and Point72 declined to provide comments regarding his exit.

Before joining Point72, Malick worked at Millennium, which also recently experienced the exit of a strategy executive, Alexander Campbell, as previously reported by Business Insider. Like Campbell, Malick transitioned to the hedge fund sector after working at Boston Consulting Group.

According to someone close to Point72, Malick was part of the senior leadership team, where he evaluated new business prospects and led strategic projects for the firm.

Malick’s LinkedIn profile also notes that he served as an advisor to the New York Mets, the Major League Baseball team owned by Steve Cohen. This advisory role has now ended, according to the same source.

Point72’s Recent Growth and Initiatives

In recent years, Point72 has broadened its scope, launching a private credit division and establishing Turion, a fund focused on artificial intelligence investments. This year, the firm introduced a new equities division called Valist, aimed at enhancing relationships with corporate leadership teams. Additionally, as previously reported by Business Insider, Steve Cohen has indicated that commodities could be the firm’s next area of expansion.

Corporate Strategy Roles on the Rise in Hedge Funds

While strategy positions remain uncommon in the $5 trillion hedge fund sector, the rise of large multistrategy firms has led to increased recruitment from consulting firms and major banks for management and operational roles.

For instance, Point72, which reports a global workforce of over 3,000 employees, hired its chief operating officer, Gavin O’Connor, from Goldman Sachs, where he spent more than 20 years.
