Nonfarm payroll data leaked in advance? Trump’s social media “slip” exposes key employment report
BlockBeats News, January 10, on Thursday evening local time, U.S. President Trump posted a chart containing yet-to-be-released key U.S. non-farm employment data on his social platform Truth Social, nearly a day before the official release time, attracting attention from the market and public opinion.
The chart shows that since January this year, the U.S. private sector has added 654,000 jobs, while the government sector has reduced 181,000 jobs. The related data was originally scheduled to be officially released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Friday along with the December non-farm employment report. The White House later responded that the disclosure was "unintentional" and stated that it would review the release and embargo agreements for economic data.
White House officials explained that the president is legally allowed to receive some economic data in advance, and part of the data used in the chart came from legitimate early briefings, but it should not have been made public during the embargo period. Trump himself stated that he was not responsible and said, "Let them have the chance to release it."
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Trump has sparked controversy by hinting at or disclosing non-farm data in advance. On the market side, after this incident, U.S. stock index futures only fluctuated slightly during thin trading hours, with no significant abnormalities observed for now.
Analysts warn that such incidents could undermine market trust in the neutrality and credibility of official U.S. economic data. Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG, pointed out that leaking sensitive data in advance could damage market fairness and prompt investors to "interpret presidential social media signals" before the official release, thereby increasing volatility risk.
