Gold and silver prices fluctuate sharply, multiple institutions predict precious metals still have room for gains this year

PANews, January 11 – According to Zhitong Finance, in the first full trading week of 2026, precious metals that performed strongly in 2025 continued their bull market trend, with both gold and silver futures prices rising cumulatively, though volatility has significantly increased. Wall Street investment bank Goldman Sachs pointed out that compared to gold trading, silver trading is expected to continue facing high volatility and uncertainty. According to analyses from several financial institutions, there are two factors this week that have intensified downward pressure on precious metal prices. First, the Bloomberg Commodity Index began its annual rebalancing adjustment this week, with the weighting of precious metals being significantly reduced. Analysts say this rebalancing is expected to trigger passive position reductions by index-tracking funds, putting profit-taking pressure on gold and silver. Second, starting after Friday's session, CME Group once again raised the margin requirements for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium futures contracts—this is the third time in the past month that CME Group has raised precious metals futures margins. This time, the margin for silver was increased by 28.6%. A sharp increase in exchange margin requirements usually curbs high-leverage and speculative trading. However, several institutions expect that even in the face of short-term downward pressure, there is still room for precious and industrial metal prices to rise this year.
