X Introduces Smart Cashtags for Real-Time Financial Insights

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, is working on a new feature called Smart Cashtags. This tool will automatically connect ticker symbols mentioned in posts to up-to-the-minute financial information.

According to a recent announcement from Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, users will soon be able to tag specific assets—such as stocks or cryptocurrencies—by using cashtags like $BTC or $NVDA in their posts.

When someone taps on a Smart Cashtag, they’ll be taken to a dedicated page within the app that displays live pricing, recent price movements, charts, and related discussions about that asset.

This feature aims to make it easier to distinguish between similar ticker symbols and smart contracts, especially in the crypto space where overlaps are common. In certain cases, assets will be identified by their unique smart contract addresses to avoid confusion.

Bier mentioned that X will gather feedback from users before officially launching the feature, which is expected to roll out next month. It remains unclear if trading or monetization options will be included at launch.

This initiative is part of X’s broader strategy to become a go-to platform for real-time financial news and market conversations, as more users turn to the app to discuss trading and investment trends.

Elon Musk has frequently expressed his ambition to transform X into an all-encompassing app, incorporating features like payments and financial services. While he has hinted at the possibility of supporting cryptocurrencies, he has not confirmed whether coins like Dogecoin—his favored meme token—will be part of any future payment offerings.

In June, former CEO Linda Yaccarino revealed plans for in-app investing and trading capabilities. She stepped down from her role the following month, and no further updates on the launch timeline have been provided. X Corp has not responded to Decrypt’s request for comment.

Nikita Bier joined X shortly after Yaccarino’s exit. He also serves as an advisor to Solana and is a venture partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners. Previously, Bier worked at xAI and Meta, where he contributed to the development of experimental consumer applications.
