Stock market update: Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq futures dip as investors await bank earnings and inflation reports
US Stock Futures Edge Lower Ahead of Busy Week
Futures for US equities dipped on Sunday evening after a strong opening week for 2026, as investors brace for a slew of earnings reports from major banks and fresh inflation data.
Contracts tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 each slipped by 0.2%, while Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.3%.
Last week ended on a high note, with stocks reaching new all-time highs. The S&P 500 and Dow both closed at record levels on Friday, capping a rally that saw the S&P 500 advance over 1% for the week. The Dow and Nasdaq Composite posted even larger gains, climbing 2.3% and 1.9% respectively.
Looking ahead, markets are focused on the upcoming consumer inflation report set for release on Tuesday. This follows Friday’s December jobs data, which indicated a gradual cooling in the labor market without pointing to a significant economic downturn.
These recent economic updates have strengthened the belief that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates steady for now. According to CME FedWatch, there is a 95% chance that rates will remain unchanged.
On the geopolitical front, uncertainty persists. Reports suggest President Trump is considering new measures regarding Iran and increasing pressure on Cuba over Venezuelan oil shipments. Additionally, Trump recently revived the controversial idea of the US seeking control over Greenland, stating the US could pursue the Danish territory regardless of Denmark’s stance.
