USD/CHF edges slightly higher above 0.8000 as US CPI inflation figures meet expectations
USD/CHF Edges Higher Amid Stable US Inflation Data
The USD/CHF currency pair is experiencing slight upward movement, trading near 0.8010 in early European hours on Wednesday. The US Dollar is gaining ground against the Swiss Franc following the release of US inflation figures that closely matched market expectations. Investors are now turning their attention to upcoming US Retail Sales and Producer Price Index (PPI) data, which are set to be published later in the day.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for December increased by 2.7% year-over-year, mirroring November’s growth and aligning with analysts’ projections. The core CPI, which excludes the more unpredictable food and energy sectors, rose by 2.6% in December, slightly down from the previous 2.7%. On a monthly basis, both headline and core CPI climbed by 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively.
The latest inflation numbers have reinforced expectations that the US Federal Reserve will maintain its current policy stance at the upcoming meeting, despite ongoing calls from the White House to reduce interest rates. As a result, the US Dollar continues to strengthen against the Swiss Franc. Futures markets suggest that a rate cut is unlikely before June.
However, lingering uncertainty surrounding the Fed’s decisions and global geopolitical tensions may enhance the appeal of safe-haven assets like the Swiss Franc. Recently, US President Donald Trump threatened Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell with criminal charges. Meanwhile, unrest in Iran has led to a government crackdown on protests, resulting in numerous casualties. President Trump has warned of possible intervention should the Islamic Republic escalate actions against demonstrators.
