GameStop Announces Widespread Store Closures Nationwide

GameStop, a major video game retailer, is shutting down numerous stores across the United States, as confirmed by various USA TODAY network sources.

Although GameStop has not issued an official statement in response to repeated inquiries, reports indicate that closures are occurring in several states, including Ohio, California, and Alabama.

According to a March 2025 SEC filing, the company revealed plans to close a substantial number of additional locations during its 2025 fiscal year, which concludes on January 31, 2026.

The documents highlight a shift in consumer behavior, with more customers opting to download games digitally rather than purchasing physical copies in-store.

A GameStop sign hangs near the entrance on May 28, 2024 in Miami, Florida.

GameStop stated, “The latest consoles from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have made downloading games easier. If the trend toward digital downloads continues to grow, it could negatively affect our business and financial results.”

At the time of the filing, GameStop reported closing 590 stores in fiscal year 2024, leaving 3,203 locations operating worldwide. The company had also previously announced intentions to exit its businesses in France and Canada.

As of February 1, 2025, GameStop maintained 2,325 stores in the U.S., with the highest concentration in Texas.

In addition to store closures, GameStop has made a significant investment in cryptocurrency, purchasing 4,710 bitcoin valued at over $443 million between May 3 and June 10, as detailed in a press release and news report.

As closures continue, an unofficial online list of shuttered GameStop stores has circulated, compiled from customer emails and in-store signage.

Below is a summary of reported and confirmed GameStop store closures to date.
