Wikimedia Foundation Celebrates 25 Years with New AI Partnerships

To mark its 25th anniversary, the Wikimedia Foundation has revealed a range of fresh collaborations with leading artificial intelligence companies, all of whom are now utilizing its commercial offering, Wikimedia Enterprise. This platform, created by the foundation, enables organizations to efficiently access and distribute content from Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects on a large scale.

Building on its 2022 partnership with Google, Wikimedia has now officially disclosed additional alliances formed over the past year with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity. Previously mentioned partners such as Ecosia, Pleias, and ProRata are also included in this announcement, alongside new names like Nomic and Reef Media.

These agreements offer Wikipedia a sustainable path forward, especially as its content is increasingly leveraged by AI systems and digital platforms to deliver accurate, instant information to users. Wikimedia Enterprise is designed not only to ensure that tech companies contribute financially for their usage, but also to provide them with high-speed, high-volume access to Wikimedia’s vast resources, tailored to their data requirements.

According to a recent blog post from the foundation, Wikipedia currently ranks among the world’s ten most-visited websites, hosting more than 65 million articles in over 300 languages and attracting nearly 15 billion views each month.

“Wikipedia demonstrates that knowledge is fundamentally human, and it thrives through human contribution. In today’s AI-driven era, the need for human-curated knowledge is greater than ever,” stated Selena Deckelmann, Chief Product and Technology Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation. “With ongoing support from our readers, volunteers, donors, partners, and global community, Wikipedia will continue to be a vital center for collaborative, human-powered knowledge for decades to come.”

Alongside these partnership announcements, the foundation has launched a special birthday campaign. This includes a new documentary video series that offers an inside look at Wikipedia’s global volunteer community, as well as a “25 Years of Wikipedia” time capsule that explores the platform’s history and future, featuring narration by founder Jimmy Wales. A live-streamed birthday celebration is also planned for January 15 at 4:00 PM UTC, featuring special guests, interactive games, and entertainment. The event will be available on Wikipedia’s YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram accounts.

The anniversary updates also spotlight recent achievements such as enhancements to Wikimedia’s technical infrastructure, its unique AI strategy, and innovative projects like new games and short-form videos, among other developments.
