Kevin Hassett shifts focus to potential ‘Trump strategies’ as credit card dispute with banks unfolds
White House Considers Expanding Credit Access for Underserved Americans
Kevin Hassett, the chief economic advisor at the White House, suggested on Friday that major U.S. banks might voluntarily offer credit cards to Americans who currently lack access to credit. This proposal is part of President Donald Trump’s broader initiative to make financial products more affordable for consumers.
Last week, President Trump proposed a 10% cap on credit card interest rates, a measure that was swiftly dismissed by banking industry leaders and their representatives. In response, Hassett, who leads the National Economic Council, has introduced an alternative approach. His plan specifically targets individuals who do not have credit cards but possess sufficient income to qualify for credit lines.
