OpenAI has revealed its acquisition of Torch, a small startup, for an undisclosed amount. According to a source cited by The Information, the deal was valued at $100 million in equity. All four members of the Torch team will be joining OpenAI, as confirmed by both organizations.
What Torch Was Building
The Torch team was developing an application designed to consolidate an individual's health data from various sources—including doctor appointments, lab results, wearable devices, and consumer wellness tests—into a single platform for AI analysis. They described their innovation as “a medical memory for AI,” aiming to bring together fragmented health records into a unified context engine.
Background of the Torch Team
The founders of Torch previously worked together at Forward Health, as shared by co-founder Ilya Abyzov in a post on X. Forward Health gained recognition for its AI-driven medical clinics, but the company unexpectedly ceased operations in late 2024 after securing more than $400 million in funding.
Integration with OpenAI
With this acquisition, the Torch team and their technology will now contribute to OpenAI’s recently introduced ChatGPT Health initiative. This new service is designed to help users leverage the chatbot for health analysis and management.
