UK media: Lagarde's actual salary is 56% higher than disclosed, four times that of Powell
According to Golden Ten Data on January 2, calculations by the UK’s Financial Times show that European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde’s total income in 2024 will be approximately 726,000 euros, about 56% higher than the “basic salary” of 466,000 euros disclosed in the bank’s annual report, and nearly four times that of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. The European Central Bank is not subject to the strict rules applied to EU-listed companies, which require companies to provide “comprehensive and reliable information on directors’ remuneration.” In addition to her basic salary, Lagarde also receives about 135,000 euros in housing and other benefit allowances. Lagarde also earns about 125,000 euros for her role as a board member of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). The European Central Bank’s annual report does not mention these allowances and additional salaries. The Financial Times’ calculation is based on the annual reports of the European Central Bank and BIS, as well as a technical document outlining the “terms and conditions of remuneration” for senior ECB officials. Due to a lack of relevant data, this estimate does not include pension contributions or medical and insurance expenses paid by the European Central Bank for Lagarde.
